Across two separate days, we’ll cover key areas including navigation, leadership, steep ground, environmental knowledge, and emergency procedures. Ideal for candidates consolidating experience or preparing for assessment, with focused coaching and clear, practical feedback.

COURSE OVERVIEW
This two-day, non-residential Mountain Leader Refresher Course is designed for those who have completed their Mountain Leader Training and are looking to consolidate their skills across the full syllabus - WITHOUT the need for an overnight expedition.
Spread over two separate days, the course offers a focused, practical refresh of key areas including navigation, group leadership, steep ground movement, rope-work, environmental knowledge, emergency procedures, and more.
With a supportive and professional approach, this workshop is ideal for candidates in their consolidation phase or those preparing for assessment. A chance to check your understanding across all elements of the ML scheme - in a flexible, day-based format.
OUTLINE:
Day 1: Navigation, Leadership & Group Management

Refresher on navigation strategies: contour interpretation, bearings, pacing, timing

Micro-navigation and navigation coaching

Blind legs, relocation techniques, and working towards assessment standard

Leadership in varied terrain: group control, communication, and route choice

Decision-making in context: vision, support, and challenge in leadership roles

Environmental awareness: discussions around access, conservation, flora/fauna, lichen/mosses

Candidate-led navigation legs and group discussions
Day 2: Steep Ground, Emergency Procedures & Broader Skills

Steep ground movement and group management techniques

Risk assessment and managing hazards in exposed terrain

Scenario-based emergency procedures and incident response

Navigation using different map scales (1:40,000 and others)

Sam holds the WMCI award, is a ML Course Director and has national Mountain Training organisation requirements to run this course,

This course is for you if you are looking to check in with your skills and gain further knowledge and understanding towards assessment for ML
EQUIPMENT
We will share a fully comprehensive kit list with you during the booking stage.
You will need to wear suitable outdoor clothing (warm and waterproof) and suitable mountain footwear (boots).
You will need all of your regular hill kit plus lunch, snacks and water for the day.
You will need your own compass and an OL4 map of the Borrowdale area.
VENUE
This workshop is delivered from the Borrowdale YHA.
It is recommended that you use the accommodation here at the YHA if you wish to stay over, they do camping too.
There are good transport links and buses running from Keswick
