The Mountain Leader scheme qualifies experienced walkers to lead groups safely in the UK and Ireland’s mountains, hills, and moorlands during summer.
To start:

You must be 18+
-
Have at least one year of mountain walking experience

Be interested in leading groups

Be a member of a mountaineering council (BMC, Mountaineering Scotland, or Mountaineering Ireland).
Once eligible, register for the scheme (£65) via the Candidate Management System.

Lake District Mountaineering and Navigation with Harriet have partnered to deliver Mountain Leader training courses that provide a supportive, inclusive environment for women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and other underrepresented groups in the outdoors. These courses are designed to build confidence, develop leadership skills, and prepare candidates for leading others in the UK mountains.

We can offer 1-1 re-assessment days, or we may be able to add you to an assessment course already running if your deferral has a leadership element.

Following my Mountain Leader Training with LDM, I wanted to ensure I also did my ML assessment with them. As ever, Sam was very professional, set and expected high standards, whilst being supportive and empathetic. We did one day with Harriet, who was also outstanding. The week was also conducted with Harriet who has been a wonderful influence on my mountain journey .
