mountain leader courses

The Mountain Leader scheme is designed for people who want to lead groups in the mountains, hills and moorlands of the UK and Ireland. If you love being out in the mountains and want to share your enthusiasm with others, become a Mountain Leader and you’ll never look back.

To get started on the Mountain Leader qualification you need to meet the following prerequisites:

  • You must be at least 18 years old

  • You should have at least a year’s worth of experience of mountain walking

  • You should have an interest in leading groups in the mountains

  • You must be a member of a mountaineering council: BMC, Mountaineering Scotland or Mountaineering Ireland (you can join one when you register if you're not already a member) - find out why

If you can meet all of the above requirements, here's what to do next:

  • Create an account on our Candidate Management System or log in if you already have one.

  • Register for the Mountain Leader scheme (this costs £65)

The Mountain Leader scheme enables experienced mountain walkers to lead groups in in the mountains, hills and moorlands of the United Kingdom and Ireland in summer conditions.

WHAT customers SAY

Assessment can be a big and scary thing. Lake District Mountaineering understands this and builds an environment through the week for you to demonstrate your skills naturally, striking an appropriate balance of support and challenge.
I had heard before that ML can be a learning experience, too. It was clear that LDM genuinely wanted you to be the best leader you could be, and to go into the hills and further awards with confidence and competence to create opportunities for others. Open discussion, guidance and feedback across the week has left me feeling empowered to put the skills into practice.

Westmorland cairn on Great Gable

Looking to gain assurance my navigational skills were where they needed to be ahead of ML assessment I arranged a refresher with Sam at Lake District Mountaineering. More familiar with Scotland's mountains but some familiarity with Lakeland terrain it was a bit of a roll of the dice, that I did and came up with 6's all day long. Sam's approach before and during the course was nothing short of professional with coaching style superbly paced, energy, enthusiasm and knowledge clear and concise at all times, he even organised for the weather gods to provide vast quantites of clag to really test us. Highly recommended with *****

I would recommend Lake District Mountaineering to anyone wanting a safe and enjoyable day/week out on the fells.
I did my Mountain Leader course with Sam and was very nervous on arrival but was put at ease straight away with the calming presence Sam gives out.
I had a fantastic time on the fells and learned so much on all aspects of being in the mountains.
