This two-day workshop takes place in the mountains and includes an overnight expedition. With a clear focus on assessment preparedness, we’ll cover navigation, leadership, and the key competencies required to meet the Mountain Leader standard.

Whether you're looking to check in ahead of your assessment or add valuable experience during your consolidation period, this course offers practical, targeted support to help you progress with confidence.

COURSE OUTLINE

This two-day mountain workshop is designed as a comprehensive refresher for those who have already completed their Mountain Leader Training. It covers all key elements of the Mountain Leader syllabus (except ropework) and includes an overnight expedition to develop confidence and consolidate your skills.

You’ll receive targeted preparation and focused, constructive feedback, making this an ideal opportunity to fine-tune your skills and address any uncertainties ahead of your assessment.

Please note: Ropework is not covered in this workshop. However, we offer a separate dedicated ropework skills course for those looking to revise or build confidence in that area.

OUTLINE:

  • Planning:

Clarify the aims and objectives of an ML expedition, with a focus on leadership decision-making in 'real-feel' assessment scenarios.

  • Leadership in the ML Scheme:

Explore the role of the leader - from setting vision to providing appropriate support and challenge to a group.

  • Navigation Coaching:

Targeted support to broaden your understanding of navigation strategies & techniques, and how to manage your navigation on assessment. 

  • Navigation to Assessment Standard:

Develop your ability to deliver accurate, confident legs using contour interpretation, blind legs, and relocation strategies - all with an assessment feel. 

  • Camp-craft & Expedition Skills:

Refine your approach to wild camping, including equipment choice, stove use, nutrition, and group leadership at camp - making sure your dialled in and efficient for your assessment week. 

  • Night Navigation:

Undertake a structured night navigation exercise to practise and demonstrate your skills in poor visibility.

  • Mapwork:

Navigate using a variety of map scales, including 1:40,000, and adapt techniques to suit different mapping styles - make sure you're at the right level on smaller scale maps. 

  • Environmental & Background Knowledge:

Discuss key themes relevant to access, conservation, flora/fauna, and the responsibilities of a Mountain Leader - and take some top tips into your assessment week. 

  • Candidate-Led Discussions:

Take part in guided discussions across the full ML syllabus to reinforce knowledge and fill any gaps.

  • Feedback & Development:

Each candidate will receive a debrief, clear goal setting, and personalised feedback to support next steps​​​

Sam holds the WMCI award, is a ML Course Director and has national Mountain Training organisation requirements to run this course,

 This course is for you if you are looking to check in with your skills and gain further knowledge and understanding towards assessment for ML

EQUIPMENT

We will share a fully comprehensive kit list with you during the booking stage.

You will need to wear suitable outdoor clothing (warm and waterproof) and suitable mountain footwear (boots).

We have a small selection of tents for hire but likely you will need your own. Sometimes it is possible to share tents. 

 Your sleeping arrangements will need to be your own. 

We are happy to discuss your requirements and kit for camping.

VENUE

We wil meet at the Borrowdale YHA on the morning of the course before heading to Seatoller to access the mountains.

 

This workshop will depart from Seatoller.

Cars can be left in the Seatoller National Trust car park.

There are good transport links and buses running from Keswick. 

£2 bus fare currently in operation.  ​
