The Trad Improvers course is designed for climbers looking to build confidence, improve gear placement, and deepen their understanding of safe, independent trad climbing practices - laying the foundations for self-reliant climbing.
This course is delivered by mountain professionals that are affiliated with the Association of Mountaineering Instructors

COURSE OVERVIEW
The Trad Improvers course offers a deeper dive into trad climbing, focusing on technical skills like rope work, gear placement, belaying, and anchor building. It is for trad climbers looking to deepen their skills - especially in gear trust, anchor building, safe seconding, and independent climbing - building toward becoming a competent and self-reliant climber.
COURSE OUTLINE:

Guided Climbing:
Start with instructor-led climbs to demonstrate techniques in real-world contexts. -
Climbing Locations & Etiquette:
Learn where to climb in the UK/Ireland, how to use guidebooks and apps, and follow best practices at the crag. -
Movement & Technique:
Develop core climbing movement skills with coaching to support your progression. -
Outdoor Tactics:
Improve route reading & rock type awareness. -
Gear & Equipment:
Gain confidence in protection. Learn secure gear placement and trusting anchors on trad gear - cams, nuts, and hexes. -
Technical Skills:
Learn and refine essential techniques. Building secure belays, equalising anchors, efficient rack management, and abseiling. -
Safety & Risk Management:
Identify hazards, mitigate risk and understand how to call mountain rescue.
WHAT TO EXPECT

Climbing on Diff–HS graded rock routes.

Technical equipment (helmet, harness, ropes) provided- just bring your own rock shoes and outdoor clothing.

Low instructor-to-client ratios (1:2 maximum) for a personalised learning experience.

Led by qualified, experienced instructors holding nationally recognised Mountain Training awards.

Climbers with some indoor and/or outdoor experience looking to progress in traditional climbing.

Anyone aiming to become a competent second or eventually lead their own trad climbs (this is a great stepping stone to our learn to lead course)

Climbers who want a refresher or coaching on safe trad techniques and up to date best practices.
Anyone aged 16+ (under-18s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian).
An Intro to Trad Climbing Course is beneficial and some prior climbing may be useful (indoors or bouldering).

Max ratio: 1 instructor to 2 clients
Bespoke 1:1 day: £260
Bespoke 1:2 day: £150pp (bring a partner)
Courses require 2 people to run fully; solo bookings secure one day of instruction
Additional instructors provided for every 2 clients
All instructors are MCI-qualified and AMI-affiliated, with extensive trad coaching experience
PRE-REQUISITES
Ages 16+ (under-18s must be accompanied)
Ages 12+ welcome on private/bespoke days
Best suited to those with some indoor or outdoor climbing experience, able to tie in and belay
Often taken after the Intro to Trad course, which provides a solid foundation—courses can be done back-to-back for progression
