Our mountain navigation courses are designed to offer structured learning opportunities to help people gain further knowledge and gain confidence towards their own mountain adventures.
Designed to be progressive and rich in content, we want to create a relaxed atmosphere and help people develop their mountain and walking skills. We have one day navigation and two day navigation courses as well as more advanced courses for those looking to develop skills to a high standard - these course include poor visibility and winter terrain.
Our courses are a perfect introduction to UK hill walking and will prepare you for the mountains of Snowdonia, Lake District and Scotland. These courses are comprehensive, building all the navigation techniques and skills needed for walking in the UK, offering good introductions, refreshers and development for all abilities.

This one-day introductory course combines practical experience with essential theory to build your confidence and competence in mountain navigation. You’ll learn key map reading skills, use of compass, and fundamental navigation techniques tailored specifically for mountainous terrain.

Elevate your navigation skills with this 3-day advanced course designed for confident mountain travel in challenging terrain and poor visibility. Build precision in map reading, compass work, and micro-navigation before progressing into a full day-into-night session for night navigation.

harvey maps
A practical 2-day course using Harvey Maps to navigate the Lake District mountains. Ideal for hill walkers, backpackers, mountaineers and mountain runners - it covers map reading, contour interpretation, compass use, and route planning. Build the skills to navigate safely and confidently in all mountain terrain.

Had a great couple of days on a mountain skills course. Sam, our instructor, was excellent! The first day we started in Honister and focused on navigation; the second day, we started in Seathwaite and had more of an adventure day where we learned a broad range of skills. Sam is very knowledgeable, patient and puts you at ease. Overall, it was an excellent experience, and I am already thinking about the next course to sign up to with Lake District Mountaineering. High recommended.
