COURSE OVERVIEW
This mountain navigation course provides a hands-on introduction to essential navigation skills for outdoor and mountainous terrain.
You’ll learn practical map reading, compass use, and route planning to navigate confidently in hills, moorland, and mountains. The course emphasises real-world application in a controlled environment, ensuring you develop the skills to find your way safely and independently.
COURSE OUTLINE:

Theory Session:
We begin by exploring different map types and how to select the right map for your outdoor adventures. You’ll learn to read map legends, scales, and symbols, building a solid foundation for interpreting essential map information.

Understanding the Map:
This session focuses on reading terrain features and contour lines to understand the shape and topography of the land.

Map Reading Skills:
You’ll practice orientating and setting your map, making it easier to navigate. Learning to line up features from the map to the ground, this will help you move with confidence in the landscape.

Navigation Strategies:
We teach you how to measure distances on a map and estimate the time needed to travel. You’ll develop practical strategies for planning safe and efficient routes and learn how to translate your planned route onto the ground using pacing and timing techniques.

Compass Basics:
Introduction to the compass, explaining its key parts and how it works. You’ll learn fundamental compass skills to help you navigate in the right direction and navigate confidently even when visibility is poor.

Introduction to GPS Navigation:
We’ll explore the use of GPS technology, highlighting recommended apps and devices suited for mountain navigation. You’ll learn which tools can enhance your navigation and which pitfalls to avoid to ensure reliable and safe use of electronic aids.

Each instructor teaches up to 6 participants; additional instructors are provided to maintain this ratio
Courses require a minimum of 2 participants

PRE-REQUISITES
Minimum age: 16+
(under 18s must be with a parent/guardian)
Under 16s (12+) welcome on private family days
No experience needed - ideal for beginners or those seeking a refresher
Friendly pace, focused on building confidence for your own adventures
EQUIPMENT
Kit lists provided at booking
Wear warm, waterproof outdoor clothing and mountain boots
Bring a sturdy rucksack, lunch, snacks, and water

Public transport from Keswick available (£2 bus fares)
Car shares can be arranged on request
We will use Grey Knotts, Brandreth and Haystacks areas on the course
Dogs not permitted on open courses
