This Harvey Maps 2-day course is a practical, hands-on program for hill walkers, backpackers, and trail runners who want to navigate safely and confidently in the mountains. Using Harvey Maps, you’ll learn map reading, contour interpretation, compass use, and route planning.

Introduction to Harvey Maps:
Learn how to read the symbols and scales (1:25k and 1:40k) and understand how terrain is represented, including ridges, valleys, scree, rock, paths, and vegetation.

Practice aligning maps with the landscape, choosing safe and efficient routes, and identifying key features to navigate effectively.

Compass fundamentals:
Learn to take and follow accurate bearings, measuring distances to integrate compass work with map reading.

Contour interpretation:
Develop skills to read slopes, ridges, valleys to better understand terrain and anticipate route challenges.

Apply your skills immediately in short, guided exercises on local mountain terrain, reinforcing map reading, bearing-taking, and route planning in a real environment.

Day 1 meets at Honister Slate Mine at 9:00am.
Day 2 will undertake a mountain journey from Borrowdale
