COURSE OVERVIEW

This self-rescue climbing course is designed for climbers looking to deepen their skills and confidently manage emergencies on the rock. Ideal for those with a foundation in lead climbing, belaying, and anchor building. The course focuses on trad leaders, multi-pitch climbers, and those tackling challenging mountain crag, sea cliffs and more challenging routes. Mastering self-rescue techniques is essential for safely handling complex situations in these environments.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Anchor Systems Review:

We’ll start by revisiting the principles of building solid, redundant anchors - focusing on rock inspection, gear setup, and how to create a reliable framework that gives you a solid anchor as a foundation to a rescue scenario.

  • Prussic Knots & Friction Hitches:

You’ll get hands-on with a range of friction hitches - learning how to tie them correctly and when to use each one, whether it’s for backing up systems, ascending ropes, or assisting with load transfers.

  • Tying Off the Belay Plate:

In an emergency, being able to lock off your belay device quickly and in a way that can be safely released is critical. We’ll cover a method for this that is efficient and ensure you can apply it confidently under pressure.

  • Ascending a Rope:

Whether you're escaping a situation or reaching a partner in need, rope ascent is a key skill. We’ll explore different techniques using prussics  and mechanical devices, and when each method is appropriate.

  • Lowering Techniques:

Learn how to lower a climber in a controlled, efficient manner - including more complex scenarios like passing knots.

  • Hauling & Hoisting:

We’ll look at how to build simple pulley systems to raise a stuck or incapacitated climber, including techniques from both your harness and the anchor. You’ll practise assisted and unassisted hoists, tailored to different real-world situations.

  • Escaping the Belay:

Being able to remove yourself from the system safely is vital in rescue situations. We’ll teach safe load transfer methods, giving you options to either go for help or take direct action to manage the incident.

  • Abseiling with an Injured Climber:

You’ll learn how to manage descent with an injured partner - using techniques such as Y-hangs and counterbalance abseils, and methods for parking a casualty mid-way through a multi-pitch descent.

  • Emergency Response & Decision Making:

We’ll cover the wider context: how and when to call for help, what Mountain Rescue needs from you, and how to make clear-headed decisions when things don’t go to plan.
