Guiding Overview

Wasdale gives access to some of the biggest and most historic mountain terrain in the Lake District: Great Gable and the Napes, Scafell and its mountain crags, Pillar & Pillar Rock, and the surrounding ridges. Wasdale Mountaineering - 2 Days uses two linked days so the plan can be shaped around weather, energy and experience rather than trying to squeeze a big objective into a single visit. One day might be primarily scrambling or mountaineering; the other may be a classic rock route or another substantial mountain journey.

Key Information

  • The weekend is deliberately flexible. The exact objectives are agreed with you and then refined around the two-day forecast.

  • Possible themes include Great Gable and the Napes, mountain crag climbing, classic scrambling, Pillar Rock or linked ridge days.

  • The two days do not need to be identical in style; we can combine a technical day with a longer mountain journey.

  • Accommodation is not automatically included in the guiding price. We can advise on practical bases around Wasdale if useful.

Who It's For

  • Climbers and scramblers who want a concentrated weekend in the western fells.
  • Visitors who would rather let an experienced local instructor shape two strong days than arrive with a rigid route list.
  • Pairs with mixed ambitions - for example one classic climb and one mountaineering day.
  • Clients preparing for bigger UK or alpine objectives who want two substantial mountain days rather than a formal course.

What To Expect

  • Two full mountain days with objectives selected to make the most of Wasdale conditions.
  • Early starts may be needed for remote crags or long approaches.
  • A mixture of walking, scrambling, climbing and technical descents depending on the plan.
  • The second day can respond intelligently to what happened on day one - weather, pace, energy and what you enjoyed most.

Pre-requisites

  • Good mountain fitness is important.
  • For climbing-focused weekends, previous outdoor climbing experience is needed.
  • For scrambling/mountaineering weekends, you should be a confident mountain walker and ideally have some scrambling experience.
  • We will tailor the plan after discussing your background.

What to Bring

  • Bring full mountain clothing and footwear for both days, food, drink, headtorch and a suitable day pack.
  • Rock shoes are needed if the plan includes rock climbing.
  • Harnesses, helmets, ropes and technical equipment can be provided.

Frequently Asked Questions

Wasdale Mountaineering - 2 Days FAQs

Is accommodation included?

No accommodation inclusion should be assumed. The guiding price covers the private guiding; we can discuss practical accommodation options separately.

Do I have to choose the exact routes before booking?

No. It is better to agree the style and ambition of the weekend, then choose the precise objectives around the forecast.

Can Pillar Rock or Napes Needle be included?

Potentially, yes, where experience and conditions suit them. Their dedicated pages explain the nature of those objectives in more detail.

Why choose Lake District Mountaineering?

  • Highly qualified mountain professionals. Technical guiding is delivered by appropriately qualified MCI / WMCI instructors.
  • Low ratios and personal planning. Standard technical guiding is 1:1 or 1:2, allowing the day to be shaped around the client or pair.
  • Local knowledge and condition-led decisions. Route choice responds to weather, rock condition, snowpack, wind and the best available terrain.
  • Objective-led private days. The focus is the mountain, ridge or climb you want to do rather than following a fixed teaching syllabus.
