Guiding Overview

Pillar Rock is one of the most distinctive objectives in the western Lake District. High above Ennerdale, detached from the surrounding mountain by steep ground, it has a place at the very start of British rock-climbing history. John Atkinson's recorded ascent in 1826 is widely regarded as one of the earliest documented rock climbs in the Lakes. Today, reaching High Man still feels like a proper mountaineering day: a long walk-in, complex terrain, exposed scrambling or climbing, and a technical descent.

Key Information

  • Pillar Rock is remote. Expect a long approach and a full mountain day rather than a short cragging session.

  • There are different ways to reach the summit, from mountaineering lines such as Slab and Notch and the Old West Route, to more technical classic rock routes.

  • For climbers, routes such as New West Climb or Rib and Slab may be considered where experience and conditions make them appropriate.

  • For summit-list clients, the objective can be built around reaching High Man using an appropriate mountaineering line rather than pursuing a harder rock climb.

  • Approach and exact route are agreed around conditions, logistics and the team; Wasdale and Ennerdale can both be relevant starting areas.

Who It's For

  • Walkers or scramblers completing Nuttalls, Birketts or personal summit lists who need technical support to reach Pillar Rock.
  • Fit mountaineers who want a classic remote Lakeland objective.
  • Trad climbers who want to climb a recognised route on one of the Lake District's most historic crags.
  • Clients comfortable with a long mountain day, exposed positions and a technical descent.

What To Expect

  • Several hours of mountain travel before and after the technical section.
  • Steep, sometimes loose or complex ground around the crag, with ropework used to manage exposed sections.
  • A summit that feels separate and distinctive rather than simply another top on the walk.
  • An abseil, lower or other technical descent will form part of the day depending on the route used.

Pre-requisites

  • Strong hill fitness is important.
  • For the mountaineering ascent, previous scrambling experience and comfort with exposure are helpful but not necessarily essential if your movement and fitness are good.
  • For the classic rock options, previous outdoor climbing experience is required.
  • We will discuss which version of the day fits you before booking.

What to Bring

  • Bring full mountain clothing, sturdy mountain footwear, food, drink, headtorch and a suitable day pack.
  • For rock-climbing options, bring rock shoes.
  • Helmets, harnesses, ropes and technical equipment can be provided.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pillar Rock FAQs

Do I have to be a rock climber?

Not necessarily. There is a mountaineering-style option for fit walkers and scramblers, but you do need to be comfortable with exposed mountain terrain and being on a rope.

Is Pillar Rock suitable as a first scrambling day?

Usually not. The remoteness and length of the day make some prior mountain and scrambling experience very useful.

Can we climb a specific route?

Yes, if your experience and the conditions suit it. We will discuss routes such as New West Climb or other appropriate lines during the enquiry.

Why choose Lake District Mountaineering?

  • Highly qualified mountain professionals. Technical guiding is delivered by appropriately qualified MCI / WMCI instructors.
  • Low ratios and personal planning. Standard technical guiding is 1:1 or 1:2, allowing the day to be shaped around the client or pair.
  • Local knowledge and condition-led decisions. Route choice responds to weather, rock condition, snowpack, wind and the best available terrain.
  • Objective-led private days. The focus is the mountain, ridge or climb you want to do rather than following a fixed teaching syllabus.
