Guiding Overview

Scottish winter climbing is defined by conditions. A route can be excellent one week and stripped, buried or unsafe the next, so good guiding means choosing the right mountain and the right line rather than chasing a name regardless of what the weather has done. This private service is for climbers who want the objective to be the focus: snow gullies, ice, mixed climbing and classic multi-pitch winter routes selected around your current experience.

Key Information

  • We use areas such as the Cairngorms, Ben Nevis, Glen Coe and Creag Meagaidh depending on where the best climbing conditions are.

  • For developing winter climbers, appropriate Grade II/III routes can provide excellent guided objectives. More experienced climbers may target harder classic lines where conditions and ability suit.

  • Snow, ice and mixed routes require different movement and protection techniques; the route style is chosen as carefully as the numerical grade.

  • If your main aim is to learn winter climbing systems rather than maximise time on routes, use Winter Climbing Coaching or the open Winter Climbing course.

Who It's For

  • Summer trad climbers with winter mountaineering experience who want to make the step onto technical winter routes.
  • Existing winter climbers who want to climb classic routes at the right grade without spending the day searching for conditions.
  • Climbers visiting Scotland for a short window who want local route selection and efficient decision-making.
  • Pairs looking for one to three days of private winter climbing.

What To Expect

  • Technical axe-and-crampon movement on snow, ice or mixed ground.
  • Multi-pitch climbing with winter protection, belays and potentially long approaches or descents.
  • Very early starts on some objectives and a plan that can change area or route as conditions evolve.
  • A day focused on climbing quality and a realistic objective rather than working through a fixed skills checklist.

Pre-requisites

  • For a first guided winter climb, you should normally have solid summer climbing experience and some previous winter mountaineering experience, including confident use of axe and crampons.
  • For harder grades, relevant winter-climbing experience is required.
  • Tell us your recent routes and grades when you enquire.

What to Bring

  • Full winter climbing clothing, suitable B2/B3 boots, goggles, headtorch and personal mountain kit are required.
  • Technical axes, crampons, helmet, harness and climbing hardware can be provided as appropriate.
  • We will confirm the exact equipment for your route style.

Frequently Asked Questions

Scottish Winter Climbing FAQs

Can you guarantee a specific winter route?

No. Scottish winter climbing depends on the route being in condition. We can use your preferred route as the ambition, but the final choice is based on conditions.

Can this be my first winter climb?

Potentially, if you already have sound summer climbing and winter mountaineering experience. If you are new to winter altogether, a skills or mountaineering course is a better first step.

Will we climb ice or mixed routes?

That depends on the conditions and your experience. We select the route style as well as the grade to give the best day.

Why choose Lake District Mountaineering?

  • Highly qualified mountain professionals. Technical guiding is delivered by appropriately qualified MCI / WMCI instructors.
  • Low ratios and personal planning. Standard technical guiding is 1:1 or 1:2, allowing the day to be shaped around the client or pair.
  • Local knowledge and condition-led decisions. Route choice responds to weather, rock condition, snowpack, wind and the best available terrain.
  • Objective-led private days. The focus is the mountain, ridge or climb you want to do rather than following a fixed teaching syllabus.
