Place protection with better judgement - and know what makes it dependable.
£150 per person
Trust Your Trad Gear focuses on the judgement behind traditional protection. You will place a range of equipment, compare options and learn to assess rock, direction of pull, stability and consequences. The aim is to make deliberate choices and build justified confidence in the protection you use.
Based in Langdale / Borrowdale. We choose the exact venue around conditions and the skills being practised.
Small-group workshop. (Max 4)
You should be able to tie in and belay and have some outdoor climbing experience. You do not need to be an established lead climber.
Weatherproof clothing, warm layers, food, drinks and personal medication. Footwear for the approach. Bring any personal climbing equipment you already own.
Please bring your own climbing shoes, as these are not provided. A harness and helmet can be supplied. If you have your own, please bring them with you.
The exact plan may adapt to weather, venue conditions and the group's experience. The stages below describe the intended focus.

No. It is useful for experienced seconds and people preparing to lead, as well as newer leaders refining their judgement.
This is a placement and judgement workshop. Taking lead falls is not required to benefit from it.
Bring it if you have one, so we can discuss equipment you actually use. Contact us beforehand if you do not own trad gear.
Taking lead falls is not a promised part of this workshop. The focus is understanding placements and judging their suitability through controlled practice and discussion.
We compare suitable types of protection and how they behave in different placements. Bring your own rack if you have one so you can ask about the equipment you normally use.
Contact us before booking or buying kit. We will confirm what you need, what can be arranged and any hire charges for this workshop.
We review conditions and may change crag or the balance of climbing and sheltered skills practice. If an alternative venue or indoor session is proposed, we will explain the arrangements and any costs.
