Winter Skills & Summits is a three-day progression course for walkers who want more time to apply winter skills on real mountain journeys. Based from Fort William, the programme develops movement, navigation, terrain choice and decision-making while working towards suitable winter summits when conditions allow. This is a winter walking course rather than a technical ropework programme.
Based in Fort William, West Highlands. We choose the exact venue around conditions and the skills being practised.
Up to 4 participants per instructor. The booking details show spaces available on each date.
You should have summer mountain experience, good fitness and some previous winter-skills experience is beneficial. Contact us if this would be your first time using axe and crampons.

If the published dates do not work, ask about a private winter skills & summit course. Tell us your experience, group size and preferred dates so we can confirm availability and a quote.
Equivalent experience is welcome. You should have mountain fitness and some familiarity with winter walking; contact us before booking if this would be your first time with axe and crampons.
No particular summit is guaranteed. We choose a suitable West Highland objective around weather, snow conditions and the group's progress.
This course develops winter walking skills through mountain journeys. Winter Mountaineering introduces more technical roped terrain, with a lower instructor-to-participant ratio.
The extra time lets you establish skills, apply them on a journey and revisit decisions on a further mountain day. It also creates more opportunity to learn from changing conditions.
