Traditional climbing is one of the best ways to become a more independent outdoor climber.
Unlike sport climbing, where protection is already fixed into the rock, trad climbing requires you to place your own protection, build anchors, manage ropes and make decisions about the route as you climb.
That makes the technical systems important, but trad climbing is about much more than learning to place nuts and cams.
Good trad climbers develop movement, judgement, route-reading, efficient ropework and an understanding of when a piece of protection is genuinely reliable.
The Lake District provides an exceptional range of venues for developing these skills, from accessible single-pitch crags through to committing multi-pitch mountain routes.
Why Choose Trad Climbing?
Trad climbing is a form of rock climbing where climbers place all the necessary protective gear as they ascend, as opposed to using pre-placed bolts. This type of climbing requires a deep understanding of gear placement, route finding, and the ability to assess and manage risks. It's an adventurous and fulfilling way to climb that emphasises self-reliance.
It adheres to the early ethics and ethos instilled in climbers and mountaineers and is the premier form of climbing in the UK - learning to trad climb gives access to all the best climbing throughout the UK.
