ML Expedition Skills, Leadership & Wild Camp
Pathway: Leadership
A two-day Mountain Leader development workshop combining expedition skills, leadership, navigation and campcraft through a practical overnight mountain journey.
Leadership
A practical Mountain Leader workshop developing simple, appropriate ropework and emergency responses for managing people in steep mountain terrain.
£125 per person
Ropework within the Mountain Leader award is about solving relatively simple problems safely, efficiently and proportionately.
This workshop focuses on the situations in which a rope may become appropriate, how to select and use suitable anchors, and how to manage straightforward emergency rope systems while maintaining control of the wider group.
We will work through practical scenarios rather than treating ropework as a collection of isolated techniques. The emphasis throughout is on judgement: avoiding unnecessary complexity, choosing an appropriate solution and understanding the limitations of the system being used.
Based in the Lake District. We choose the exact venue around conditions and the skills being practised.
Small-group workshop (Max 4)
Mountain Leader training or equivalent scheme knowledge is recommended. Bring the current syllabus and any personal rope normally used in your leadership practice.
Weatherproof clothing, warm layers, food, drinks and personal medication. Walking boots or appropriate mountain footwear, a day pack, map, compass and headtorch. Bring personal ropework equipment if owned; we will confirm the list for the planned terrain and tasks.
Maps and compasses can be provided, but we recommend bringing your own. We will tell you which map you need and recommend a Silva Expedition 4 compass.
The exact plan may adapt to weather, venue conditions and the group's experience. The stages below describe the intended focus.
