OVERVIEW
Our Skills for the Hills course is a great way to gain experience and knowledge towards enjoying the UK mountains safely.
It is a good first step for those looking to build confidence to head out independently, allowing you to gain the understanding towards managing the risks that are associated with mountain walking.
The course runs over 2 days, here is what is covered over both days:

Planning
Plan appropriate walks in the mountains

Clothing & equipment
What to wear & why and what extra equipment to carry. We will discuss how to efficiently carry everything and how to effectively pack a rucksack.

Weather
Reading weather forecasts for the mountains and understanding how weather effects us on the mountain

Walking Skills
Discussions around pace, movement skills & effective walking techniques

Navigation
Understanding and reading the map, such as the scales, symbols and contours. Looking at the 4D's of navigation and how relay the map to the ground and accurately pace and time your legs and keep track of your journey.

Steep Ground
How to move on steep ground and unroped scrambles. There will be the opportunity to look at using a rope for an emergency.

Environmental knowledge
A look at and discussion around mountain flora and fauna. Understanding the geology of the Uk uplands.

Emergencies in the mountains
How to respond to and deal with emergencies and hazards in the mountains and what to do if something goes
Both days will run in the mountain environment.
Day 1 will meet in a cafe setting, where we will discuss all the planning and equipment stages of the course. We will then head out into the hills.
Day 2 will be based on the hill all day, and incorporate a mountain journey, hopefully ticking off some Wainwright summits.

1:6 Ratio - 6 people per 1 instructor
Our instructors can teach up to 6 people on this course.
This is an open course and will allow the opportunity to meet likeminded people.
We can run bespoke at 1-1 but prices will vary.

Pre-Requisites
This course is for beginner walks or those looking to gain more experience and confidence in the mountains.
There are no pre-requisites.
We will cover navigation, steep ground, environmental knowledge, planning and equipment so it is varied course.
Equipment
Full and comprehensive kit lists will be shared during the booking stage
You will need to wear suitable outdoor clothing and have appropriate mountain footwear (boots).
Map & compass - LDM can provide maps and any ropes as necessary
Venue
Our venues are carefully selected and tailored to get the most out of the programme.
Day 1 meets in Coniston and uses the fells around the Old Man of Coniston.
Day 2 runs from Langdale, meeting at the Sticklebarn National Trust car park.
Day 2 is a full mountain day with a bigger journey.
