When it comes to hill walking, we have to give a special mention to Alfred Wainwright; he has provided much inspiration to many people about routes and mountain choices in Lakeland. Wainwright has documented and studied the Lakeland fells through a series of pictorial guides - it is these works of art that provide us with insight into a captivating landscape. These books should be a primary source of information for any keen fell walker and we recommend looking into these when choosing where to go in the fells.

Popular and accessible. This is a walk for families and provides lots of interest for the younger ones.

An earlier or later ascent pays to avoid the crowds and make the best of the light offered at these times of day.
