Private winter walking itineraries for the high fells of the Lake District when covered in snow & ice.  Hire a guide to learn how to use winter equipment and summit safely.

Winter boots can be hired (£10 per day, per pair)

This itinerary is for those looking to experience the winter mountains. 

A private day is bespoke to you and your party - and you can book our guides privately outside of our winter course dates. 

On these bespoke days, you can join our guides to summit winter mountains, journey through the winter landscape safely and develop winter skills in the process.  

On these days we always hope to develop skills to allow access into the high mountains when covered in snow and ice.  Our guides are on hand to provide the technical knowledge and skill to keep you safe in this dynamic environment. 


During the day, expect to cover the following skills on your mountain journey: 

Movement on snow - using the boot as a tool and kicking steps

Ice axe technique - for security and balance and for cutting steps

Crampons - fitting crampons, walking in crampons and front pointing

Avalanche awareness - to stay safe and develop understanding of a hazardous and dynamic landscape

Skill Development

A day in winter with our guides should be educational and develop your winter knowledge and you will learn new skills such as ice axe use, walking in crampons and some avalanche knowledge relating to your day/journey.


The Helvellyn massif is usually the most reliable for winter weather but if the conditions are right, we can take you to any snow covered fell and gain access to the high summits.

You will need to wear suitable clothing for winter mountaineering, including a full set of waterproofs, warm layers, hat & gloves, ski goggles and winter walking boots.

Your mountaineering boots should be rigid and rated to B1/B2 standard (we can advise during the booking stage).

Boots can be hired from LDM, subject to sizes and availability of our stocks 

We can provide crampons, ice axe, helmets and other technical equipment.


The fee is for instruction/guiding only.  Please source your accommodation and travel to the meeting locations.

Private Days 

Each walk is tailored to you and your group.  We provide a guide for you and your group only and each day is focussed on delivering what you need, with our full attention. 


1:6 Ratio - 6 people per 1 instructor

Our instructors can guide up to 6 people during winter conditions.  


These days are private and bespoke, which means we provide a guide for up to 6 people of the same party. 

These days are offered outside of our course dates.


Some experience of hill walking in summer conditions. 


You will need to be fit and able to walk in the snow carrying a rucksack.

The guide will be on hand for navigation, emergencies, route choices and avalanche safety.

Crampons & axes can be provided for private days and are inclusive of price. 

You will need to wear suitable outdoor clothing and have appropriate mountain footwear 

(B1/B2 boots - these are rigid to take crampons)

Our venues are carefully selected and tailored to get the most out of the programme. 

We can use venues and locations that are seeing the best winter conditions at the time. 

Winter bookings conditions: It may be necessary to change the outline of the day to offer general mountaineering/mountain skills programmes and undertake a snow free mountain journey if conditions are not suitable.
