Canyoning - Lake District

What is Canyoning?

Canyoning is a multi sport adventure that combines rock and water activities such as climbing, swimming and abseiling.

It is an all round mountaineering adventure, where you will trek through the watercourse of a mountain stream and descend steep gorges where they form cascades and deep pools.

On a canyoning adventure with LDM expect to abseil through or behind waterfalls, jump into deep pools, slide down natural slides and toboggan runs, scramble down and over rock steps and swim through amazing pools and small lagoons.

This is an amazing way to explore a totally different perspective on the Lake District.

ICOPro (International Canyoning Organisation for Professionals

ICOPro is a professional canyoning organisation dedicated to training and assessing canyoneers. LDM have been through the training and are trained up to level 3 standard within the ICOPro framework.

This means our instructors use ICOPro standards when leading our canyon trips, meaning we adhere to internationally recognised best practice.

LDM Canyons

We offer canyon sessions that are up to 3 hours long, and therefore last for half a day.

Our full day canyons last up to 6 hours and go to some amazing locations.

Half Day Canyons

Stoneycroft Canyon

Suitable for families and children of 12+

We will descend using natural rock slides and toboggan runs, jump into the 'corkscrew' and splash around in some of the clearest water in the Lake District.

From here, we will enter the lower section. At this point there will be a series of lowers and abseils over waterfalls and cascades in order to progress down.

Church Beck

Suitable for families and children of 12+

The descent will be via a series of lowers and abseils down waterfalls and through the cascades of the beck. This is an aquatic canyon, and you will be fully immersed in the water all the way through the trip.

After a few waterfalls abseils, the canyon will narrow and we will head down into the slot section of the gorge. Here we have a series of jumps that need to be undertaken in order to progress down.

As a fitting finale, we encounter the infamous slide of Church Beck - sitting on the rock slide you will slide down and into the deep pool below.

This is the perfect natural waterpark.

Full Day Canyons

The Esk Gorge

This is an all round adventure suitable for 16+

Best for big jumps - up to 6 hours

This is a fully aquatic journey as we ascend the gorge.

If you are looking for an adrenaline filled adventure then this is for you. This trip offers some of the biggest jumps in the Lake District; we have up to 8 jumps at this venue, up to 14 metres in height.

We are jumping into huge plunge pools with crystal clear water, scrambling up the watercourse and over waterfalls. We will fix ropes to aid your progression as we ascend the canyon.

For the finale, we will be heading into Lingcove Beck, a short walk over from the Esk Gorge.

We will enter Lingcove Beck and we will descend the watercourse, back to our original starting point.

This will be via an abseil. You will lower yourself into the pool below, adjacent to a huge waterfall.

Longsleddale Canyon

This is an authentic canyon adventure suitable for 16+

Mostly you will be descending the waterfalls by abseils and zip lines - all of which will be rigged and set up on site by the instructor.

We will demonstrate correct abseiling techniques and safeguard your descent as appropriate. We will move down through the watercourse, scrambling, jumping and climbing our way through - using the appropriate techniques for each section

We provide two guides where necessary, this is for enhanced safety and also for efficiency of movement, so we can move through the environment at a reasonable pace and stay warm where necessary.

Fisherplace Canyon

This is an authentic canyon adventure suitable for 16+

Mostly you will be descending the waterfalls by abseils and zip lines - all of which will be rigged and set up on site by the instructor.

The first two abseils are a good taster and practice for you as you descend over small cascades.

We will demonstrate correct abseiling techniques and safeguard your descent as appropriate. We will move down through the watercourse, abseiling, scrambling, jumping and sliding our way through - using the appropriate techniques for each section

The main section is the central slot of this canyon. A slot is where the canyon narrows, meaning it will become steep sided. We will abseil and swim through this section. There are some avoidable sections on this canyon, meaning it is escapable if necessary.
