Course Outline

This course will build on the previous navigation programme.

We will recap:

  • Choosing a map

  • Reading the map

  • Understanding scales and symbols

  • Basic contours.

  • Orientate the map

  • Measure distances

We will progress your knowledge and cover:

  • Relaying distance from map to ground

  • Complexity of timing and pacing

  • Intricate contour interpretation

  • Compass work such as taking and following bearings

  • Back bearings

  • Relocation techniques

We hope to ensure people leave with the confidence to navigate in mountain terrain and poor visibility by the end of this course.

We will provide maps of the area we will be covering but we advise you to buy and bring along your own Silva Expedition 4 compass to practice with and use going forward.
