OVERVIEW

This is a mountain navigation  course with 6 spaces, open to the public. 

 

This course is designed to help develop understanding of mountain navigation, looking at the features of the map, contours and compasses. 

 

This course will take a progressive approach to navigation.

 

We start with some theory (1 hour max)

Here we will have a discussion around:

  • Planning Routes (resources, websites etc)

  • Choosing a map

  • Reading the map

  • Understanding scales and symbols

  • Grid References

On the hill we will teach you how to:

  • Orientate the map

  • 4 D's of navigation

  • Measure distances

  • Timings

  • Navigate via linear features such as paths, walls and streams

  • Develop hand railing techniques

  • Basic contours & interpretation

  • Introduction to the compass and its features

  • Compass bearings

Throughout the day we will look into different techniques and navigate around the mountainside. Experienced navigation tutor & mountain leader, map, compass and all training and teaching aids are included in the cost for this course.

The price of this day is inclusive of:

  • A qualified Mountain Leader or Mountaineering Instructor

  • Leaders affiliated with Mountain Training Association

1:6 Ratio - 6 people per 1 instructor

Our instructors can teach up to 6 people on this course. 

 

This course is open to the public and has 6 spaces per course.

Pre-Requisites 

This is a mountain navigation course and although it will be pitched at a beginner level, some hill walking experience will be beneficial. 

If you have never been hill walking and require a more introductory course, then please enquire as this can be arranged

Equipment

  We will share kit lists with you during the booking stage

You will need to wear suitable outdoor clothing and have appropriate mountain footwear (boots).

Compasses can be hired (£5pp)

We recommend Silva Expedition 4 if purchasing your own

All maps are provided by LDM

Venue

Our venues are carefully selected and tailored to get the most out of the programme. 

We base the course in Great Langdale - meeting at Sticklebarn National Trust car park. LA22 9JU.

This allows us to use the whole valley including the Langdale Pikes as necessary
