MCI - Scrambling Preparation Day

Are you a trainee Mountaineering Instructor? This is a one day workshop to help you hone your skills ahead of assessment or to help consolidate your skills and gain feedback on rope work & guiding techniques.  This is your opportunity to ask lots of questions to people you have been there and done it. 

This course is delivered by a mountain professionals that are affiliated with the Association of Mountaineering Instructors

This is a 1 day workshop to help MCI trainees gain more understanding and clarification on scrambling techniques shown on their training.  It's an opportunity to ask questions, be observed, discuss techniques and ultimately gain some skills, tips and tricks towards either their assessment, or future guiding on scrambles. 

This is an unofficial workshop and not affiliated to any organisation or association.  It is a purely a coaching day for anybody looking to gain some further knowledge and techniques from working and up to date MCI holders.

COURSE OUTLINE

Rope work, knots and distances

An opportunity to get your rope distances dialled; spacing between clients, how many coils to take etc

Working out your system

Briefings

Whats important to explain and how. e.g tightness of rope, on which side, how to move together, commands etc

Building Judgement

When are we walking, scrambling, climbing and when is it appropriate for clients to leave a belay?

Managing different abilities

Short Roping

Short roping transitions

Effective body position

Hand coils, laps or loops?

Building Belays

Choosing appropriate belays, having enough working space

Bringing two people onto a ledge 

Turning munter hitches to clove hitches 

Descending

Managing descent

 Down climbing and safeguarding 

Short roping in descent, counter balancing yourself in descent

BY THE END OF THE COURSE ,YOU CAN EXPECT TO:

Be more confident on technical scrambles, moving with two people and managing them, 

Have more confidence in terrain judgement, 

Be able to short rope effectively in a straight and strong position, 

Be able to justify all of the decisions you make and have a greater understanding of safeguarding scrambles

Course Ratios

1:2 Ratio

2 people per 1 instructor in technical terrain

4 spaces per course means we will supply up to 2 instructors for some of the course

This course is a bespoke and can be tailored around you, your skillset, your experience and your overall goals. 

Pre-Requisites 

18+

You will have completed your MCi training and you are looking to gain some further insight towards scrambling methodology

 

This course would suit those that are working towards their MCI assessment or those that may have deferred on this element of the syllabus. 

Equipment

Harness, helmet, ropes & climbing hardware are available to use and included in the price

We will share kit lists with you during the booking stage

You will need to wear suitable outdoor clothing and have appropriate mountain footwear (boots).

Venue

These courses meet in the Langdale Valley. We will meet at the Sticklebarn Tavern for course introductions at 9:00am 

 

Here we will discuss your aims and outline the course structure 

We use scrambles on Raven Crag, White Ghyll, Pavey Ark, Harrison Stickle, Thorn Crag and Loft Crag,
