LAKES WINTER SKILLS
Progress from the 1 day course and join us for second day. This allows for time for skills to be refined and a mountain journey to be achieved in the high fells.

2 Day Course
This course covers all the same techniques as the 1 day course, but allows for more contact time, skill refinement and improvement as well the opportunity to undertake a winter mountain journey.
On this course we cover;
Movement on snow - using the boot as a tool and kicking steps
Ice axe technique - for security and balance and for cutting steps
Crampons - fitting crampons, walking in crampons and front pointing
Self arrest - for halting a slip and gaining control
Avalanche awareness - to stay safe and develop understanding of a hazardous and dynamic landscape
Winter navigation - all those summer features become covered; practice on a different scale map and winterise your navigation.
The Helvellyn massif is usually the most reliable for winter weather but if the conditions are right, be prepared to explore any of the high Lakeland fells in snowy conditions.
We recommend having some summer hill walking experience before undertaking this course
You will need to wear suitable clothing for winter mountaineering, including a full set of waterproofs, warm layers, hat & gloves, ski goggles and winter walking boots. These boots should be rigid and rated to B1/B2 standard (we can advise during the booking stage).
We can provide crampons, ice axe, helmets and other technical equipment. Please make use of our winter kit lists.
