This course is aimed at hill walkers looking to experience scrambling and venture onto graded mountaineering ground. We will look at how to operate on grade I scrambles with safe and efficient movement.

This course is delivered by mountain professionals that are affiliated with the Association of Mountaineering Instructors

As a hillwalker, this course will allow you to progress onto grade I scrambles, using more technical ground as part of your mountain journey and operate in this terrain safely and efficiently. 

We will be looking at the fundamentals of scrambling movement and looking to build confidence to move over rocky steps, loose ground and steep scree.

COURSE OUTLINE

Gear Introduction 

Choosing footwear, guidebooks, ropes etc

Basic Scrambling Techniques:

Footwork, Handholds, and Balance

Route Selection and Terrain Assessment

Route reading and what to look for on the move

Building Skills and Confidence

Face climbing, chimneys, and gullies and other scrambling techniques

Use of Protection and Basic Rope work

Basic knots an rope work if appropriate to do so 

Safety Protocols and Communication

Using guidebooks and resources, planning a scramble, finding the route, calling for rescue

SKILLS COVERED

Fundamental walking, climbing & movement skills

Moving unroped in Grade I terrain 

Guidebooks and gear

Route finding 

Assessing risk and making judgement 

Spotting and looking after team members

Basic rope work as necessary to the day 

Safeguarding descent

Jacks Rake on a scrambling course

BY THE END OF THE COURSE, YOU CAN EXPECT TO:

Be more confident in the mountains, moving over rough ground such as scree and rock,

Able to route find and assess risk, 

Able to judge terrain and make decisions appropriate to the weather and your skillset,

Covered lots of scrambling in grade I terrain

1:4 Ratio

4 people per 1 instructor in technical terrain

4 spaces per course 

This is an open course so feel free to book as an individual - minimum 2 people to courses to run

Pre-Requisites 

18+

This course would suit hillwalkers looking to experience scrambling or scramblers looking to more gain confidence and work on their movement skills

We will be looking at the fundamentals of scrambling movement and looking to build confidence to move over rocky steps, loose ground and steep scree. 

Equipment

Helmets and ropes are available to use and included in the price (if needed)

We will share kit lists with you during the booking stage

You will need to wear suitable outdoor clothing and have appropriate mountain footwear (boots).

Venue

These courses use the Langdale Valley and we will meet at the Sticklebarn Tavern for course introductions at 9:00am 

 

Here we will discuss your aims and outline the course structure for the day

We use scrambles on Raven Crag, White Ghyll, Pavey Ark, Harrison Stickle, Thorn Crag and Loft Crag.
