Map and compass navigation

Course Outline

This course will take a progressive approach to navigation.

We will have discussion around:

  • Planning Routes (resources, websites etc)

  • Choosing a map

  • Reading the map

  • Understanding scales and symbols

  • Basic contours 

On the hill we will teach you how to:

  • Orientate the map

  • 4 D's of navigation (Description, Distance, Direction, Duration)

  • Measure distances

  • Timing legs 

  • Navigate via linear features such as paths, walls and streams

  • Develop hand railing techniques

  • Introduction to the compass and its features

This course will teach the fundamentals of map reading and lay the groundwork for those wishing to progress onto the next course and develop their mountain navigation. 

We will provide maps of the area we will be covering but we advise you to buy and bring along your own Silva Expedition 4 compass to practice with and use going forward.
