cathedral quarry, lake district national park. The chamber room also known as the cathedra

This is a half day activity - lasting up to 3.5 hours.

It will allow you the opportunity to abseil down sheer walls and vertical rock faces and experience the thrill walking backwards down the wall, controlling your descent.

Your instructor will manage the session as you undertake the abseil. They will rig the abseils safely and provide a clear demonstration on how to abseil.

You will control your own decent as you go but we will always have a backup rope clipped to you for ultimate safety.

This session is run in three main locations, all close to Coniston and Ambleside.

These are:

Tilberthwaite Quarry

Hodge Close

Cathedral Quarry

Undertaking a journey down to Cathedral Quarry allows for a short walk through the woodland area. The walk is around 20 minutes on woodland trails and rocky paths.

On arrival we will explore some of the old mine tunnels and caverns left behind by the slate industry. We will take you inside the famous cathedral cavern and explore the quarry itself.

At Cathedral Quarry, the abseils are up to 45 metres in height and sometimes free-hanging in space, this is a great challenge as you descend down the quarry floor.

The price of this day is inclusive of:

  • A qualified & experienced instructor

  • Local & intimate knowledge of the venues

  • All technical equipment

  • Professional instruction, coaching & guidance

1:8 Ratio - 8 people on this session

The will rig each abseil on arrival - the session is progressive, 1 smaller abseil and 1 big abseil.

Full demonstration will be given and safety brief delivered to all.

You will abseil one at a time. Controlling your own descent - but the system is backed up by the instructor for your safety.
